GAINESVILLE-HAWTHORNE STATE TRAIL
Project Location:
Gainesville, Florida
Construction Completed:
2017
George & Associates, Consulting Engineers, Inc. (G&A) provided engineering services for resurfacing 7 miles of the 15-mile Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail Bike Path within Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. Resurfacing locations included trail head, wildlife observation sections as well as adjacent neighborhoods. Reconstruction of 0.6 miles required soil removal and replacement designed with two bi-axle Geogrid layers separated with specified soil in accordance with the Geotechnical Investigation.
Many segments of this historic ‘rail trail’ intertwine with sink holes, creeks and wetlands that connect the larger water bodies in and around the Preserve. G&A went to considerable measures to protect adjacent forested wetlands around segments of trail that required reconstruction, and some portions of the trail that paralleled SE Hawthorne Rd and CR 2082 had wetlands on both sides of the trail.
